Miserable experience in Lalit Chandigarh

I stayed at the Lalit Chandigarh last moth. I returned with 3 key cards. The key card proudly says “Key to Luxury”. Luxury is not about the quality of amenities, though that also matters. In the hospitality business, luxury is really about attention : attention to detail, attention to the guest. During my stay I did not get the kind of attention that signals a high quality service experience. Why do I have 3 cards? Because I had to shift from room to room. I loved the view of the Shivalik hills that is advertised on the website. So I booked a forest view room, hoping to have a relaxed time, looking at the serene view. The first room I was given, the window was so dirty, it was a wall of dusty, opaque grey, nothing was visible through this. I tried calling the reception and got no reply, so I went down. The reception staff was polite, for sure, and I was given another room. This was a floor below, the window was clean, but the view was not as good, since it wasn’t so high. What was worse, I could see a party on the lawns below. The party got over late at night and my so-called peaceful evening was marred by the sound of off-key ghazals and karaoke singing. I thought I would cheer up and I went to the 24/7 coffee shop. Both at dinner and at breakfast the next morning, I got ZERO attention. Not a single waiter/manager asked how I was doing, whether I would like anything. I made a request for pooris, for coffee, and so on and each time, I had to remind the staff 2-3 times before I got the item. The worst was when I asked for hot water with my coffee and when it was given it me – it was in a mug, not in a kettle which any stylish restaurant would have given – I peered into it and asked why the water looked yellow. The waiter shrugged and said “I don’t know” and walked away, leaving me with that strange water. Is it because I was a single older woman, dining alone, that I was so ignored? Or was it because I had complained about the room? Either way, it was quite upsetting. That night, when I returned to the hotel, very tired, hoping for a good night’s sleep, I was horrified to find that there was ANOTHER party on the lawns, this time it was really loud and disruptive. Again, I tried the reception, no reply, 4-5 times. I wearily went down and spoke to the manager. I was told they had no idea how long the party could go on, it could be midnight or even 1 am. He offered to shift me to another room. I went with the staff to the room – which was just as noisy and smelling of cigarette smoke. When I said that wouldn’t work, they got me another room, which was a bit away from the party - so the sound was less jarring, but no less disturbing. By this time, I was so exhausted, I didn’t have dinner at all. Once again, the promise of a quiet evening was an illusion. I think this is patently dishonest, to make me pay extra for a forest view while subjecting me to disco music of a retailers meet for 4-5 hours. The hotel should let the guest know that there are events going to take place, so we can make an informed choice on whether the view is worth the noise. During checkout I informed the reception that I have never had such an unhappy experience in a 5 star hotel. To which I got a smile. To make matters worse, I was doubled billed on 2 cards and I had to call to sort that out. I can’t believe I had to change my room 3 times and not a single manager contacted me to find out if I was comfortable – that’s so very basic in customer service training. I have stayed in 5star hotels in many cities, in many countries. All hotels have some problem, some issue. The difference is that when a guest points it out, the classy hotels are trained how to deal with this. Why was it so difficult for your staff to realize that an older woman, traveling alone, needing a restful night, needed a little attention to her comfort? It could have been so easy to make me a happy guest. All you had to do was check in on me once in a while, find out if my stay was peaceful and comfortable. Instead, I just got indifference and shrugs – I got the impression that I was seen as complaining and annoying, without considering that my complaints were all valid. I sent this feedback directly to the hotel in the hope they would respond with an acknowledgement, however, there was radio silence.

1. The hotel is luxurious and well laid out. 2. The open space and greenery are great. 3. The swimming pool area needs little more sun, the water is very cold. 4. The bread and croissants in breakfast are stale, food otherwise is great in terms of variety and quality less the bread and the dosas. Cheers to the management, loved the stay and the facilities

The Lalit at Chandigarh is almost unmatched in the service, hospitality, friendliness and in general showing care for a guest. The hotel is luxurious, combined with incredible food and service from the staff that is unmatched to any other hotel. In all my trips to India, I always stay at The Lalit and I am amazed how they customise to my needs and make me feel special. Highly recommended to anyone who wants a genuine and wonderful experience during their stay.

We went to celebrate my Moms birthday at Baluchi restaurant within Lalit Chandigarh. The experience starts as soon as you arrive at the property and it gets better and better as long as you are there. We were greeted so warmly by the staff when we entered the restaurant and they provided us a table of our liking and then we were all set to experience the great hospitality with all warmth and affection. Staff made sure to introduce themselves and also get some basic understanding about us regarding the food preferences and including the occasion details, which was my moms birthday. The staff wished and greeted her so warmly and then they told me that everything will be taken care for the celebration as they deemed her to be their own mothers as most of them were living far off from there homes. This made it more special The staff consistently kept a check for our requirements and also suggested some nice must try options, we really liked their Dal Bhukani (Dal Makhani) and Mong Papad ki sabzi, enjoyed with variety of breads but Amritsari kulcha is a must try. Towards the end, They brought a lovely surprise cake for my mom in a very well presented and decorated plate, then all the staff was with us celebrating the moment, This was such a nice and great gesture, making memories that too on my moms 60th birthday. Thank you Nitish, Samuel and Aziz and entire team who was there. This was really a special and a memorable experience.
